Paris Rental Cars

Paris Rental Car

Paris rental cars are one of the best methods of visiting attractions outside of Paris for those who enjoy driving.

Rental cars are not recommended for getting around in Paris as traffic in the city is generally heavy, movement is slow and parking is problematic.

Highways and Roads

France has a network of multilane super highways that connect various cities. Most if these highways, called "autoroutes a peage," are toll roads.
The "Route Nationale" is managed by the national government and the maintenance of local roads, the "Routes Departementales," is the responsibility of the local government. Though you may not be able to drive as fast on these local roads, they tend to be more scenic than the modernized highways.

Paris Rental Cars

Paris rental cars, as in most big cities, can be found at many locations. You may also check prices and make reservations online at Hertz, Avis or Budget.

Rental car costs vary based on the kind of vehicle, the rental car company and the amount of time. Costs range from as low as 44 USD to 171 USD for a day.

Eligibility

To hire Paris rental cars, you must be at least 21 years of age (may vary depending on the kind of car rented) and have held a license for at least a year. For those who are below 25 years there is an additional surcharge.

Speed Limits and Rules

Speed limits in France vary depending on the kind of road and the condition.

  • Toll motorways – 130km/hr and 110km/hr when wet.

  • Dual carriages and non-toll motorways – 110km/hr.

  • Main roads – 90km/hr.

  • Towns and villages – 50km/hr (this may vary depending on the size of the town or village and so it is advisable to keep a look out for signs).

  • All vehicles are driven on the right side of the road, and the authorities are extremely strict about traffic and speeding rules. Fines are collected on the spot in the form of either cash or travelers checks. UK cars are expected to display a prominent GB sticker that is available from cross channel operators.

Service Stations

If you are planning a long trip into the rural area, make sure that you have a tank full of gasoline since finding a station in the late hours may be difficult. Most of the service stations in Paris are closed on Sundays and after 6:00 p.m.. Insurance

Check on whether your current auto insurance covers you in Paris. In case it does not, it is advisable to arrange for insurance with the car rental company.

Advantages

  • Paris rental cars provide the flexibility you may want for traveling in the countryside near Paris. You can easily explore various sites in an area which would be impossible to do by train.

  • Paris rental cars offer driving pleasure and control over your schedule.

Disadvantages

  • Traffic jams and just normal slow traffic can make driving a car a very slow and frustrating way of getting around in Paris.

  • Parking a car often can be very difficult in Paris unless you can find one of the many underground parking lots that have been developed.
