The Best Restaurant in Paris?

Enjoy a Memorable Dining Experience in Paris

If you visit Paris, you are likely to enjoy the legendary cuisine because outstanding restaurants abound and many with moderate prices offer meals that are excellent. However, you may want to have at least one memorable dining experience that is exhilarating and thrilling at the time and becomes a warm glow of happy memories that you will recall 20 years later as a major highlight of your visit to Paris.
Purpose of this Article

The purpose of this article is to encourage you to enjoy and delight in a memorable dining experience while in Paris and to inform you about Taillevent which may be the best restaurant in Paris. Lunch or dinner at Taillevent should truly be a memorable dining experience and a highlight of your visit to Paris that you will warmly remember perhaps as long as you live.

Reservations

Many visitors to Paris wait until they arrive to think about where they will eat. If you want to have a memorable meal, you must plan for it long before you arrive in Paris. Reservations at top restaurants often are closed weeks or even months in advance. Reservations are difficult to obtain at Tallievent and should be made as early as possible, preferably several months before visiting Paris.

Cost

I realize that cost of meals is a major factor for many visitors to Paris, as it should be. And lunch or dinner at Tallievent is quite expensive. Average meal prices, from the Taillevent website, are 120 to 140 euros for the a la carte menu, 70 euros for the lunch menu, 140 euros for the tasting menu and 190 euros for the discovery menu.

If you are on a tight budget in Paris, consider ways to save money on meals by having picnic lunches, breakfasts in your hotel room and eating in cafes. Estimate possible savings from such plans and compare with the cost of a memorable meal. You may be surprised that you can have a memorable meal this way without breaking your Paris budget. Also, keep in mind that lunches generally are less expensive than dinners.

Taillevent

After extensively researching Paris restaurants on the Internet, tour guides, and Paris restaurant guides, I recommend Taillevent for a truly memorable dining experience. Taillevent is widely recognized for its excellence in haute cuisine, popularity, decor and service.

Taillevent is located in a townhouse built in 1852 that was once owned by the half-brother of Napoleon III and more recently was the Embassy of Paraguay. Taillevent was founded in 1946 by Andre Vrinat. His son, Jean Claude Vrinat, joined the restaurant in 1962 and receives much credit as owner for the continuing preeminence of Taillevent.

The brilliant chef, Alaine Soliveres, joined Taillevent in 2002. He is highly creative in the preparation of culinary delights and emphasizes use of fresh ingredients that are in season. He creates many classics, such as grilled scallops with green olives and chorizo, lobster boudin (sausage), and sea bass in a spectacular truffle sauce. Many other of his classic dishes are described in the reviews linked to below.

The menu changes frequently and includes eight-course meals. The service is impeccable. One diner forgot her glasses, and a waiter appeared with several pairs of glasses of various strengths on a silver platter. The owner often talks with a customer to ensure that the food and service are acceptable. The world-class wine list is superb and exhaustive. The decor is comforting and appealing with fine oil paintings, some contemporary canvases and flower arrangements. The two dining rooms have a refined atmosphere and tables are arranged for intimacy.

Here is some evidence that Taillevent may be the best restaurant in Paris:

  • Taillevent has received three stars from Michelin, the guide’s top rating, each year for the last 33 years.

  • Taillevent is ranked number 1 in Paris for both haute cuisine and popularity by a major restaurant survey.

  • Patricia Wells, restaurant critic of the International Herald Tribune, has stated that Taillevent is the best restaurant in Paris. She has also stated that Taillevent would be high among a handful of names that might be considered the world’s finest restaurant.

  • Taillevent maintained its top status in spite of several changes in head chef within a five-year period, a blow that often diminishes the status of lesser restaurants. Much credit for Taillevent’s preeminence is given to Jean-Claude Vrinat, its owner.

  • Taillevent is often called the best restaurant in Paris or the world by many who have eaten there.
